24 Mar Survival to Sustainability: Resilient and Competitive Swine Production Amid Disease Pressure and Import Competition
By Christian Jhason O. Tecbobolan, DVM
On January 30, 2026, members of the United Batangas Swine Raisers Association, Inc. (UNIBAT) gathered for their monthly meeting, where industry stakeholders discussed pressing challenges facing the swine sector. The session centered on the theme “Survival to Sustainability: Resilient and Competitive Swine Production Amid Disease Pressure and Import Competition.” The event provided a platform for knowledge sharing and strategic discussions aimed at strengthening the resilience and competitiveness of local swine producers.
The first presentation was delivered by, Jherome Gabriel Carpila provided an industry update focusing on current economic and disease-related challenges. His presentation examined the continued growth of pork imports and its impact on farm gate prices, a key concern for local swine raisers striving to remain competitive. Carpila also shared the latest updates regarding African Swine Fever (ASF) and how the disease continues to influence production strategies and farm biosecurity measures. In addition, he introduced the Lean Team Program, a collaborative initiative designed to support farmers through technical guidance, improved production practices, and strategic farm management aimed at boosting efficiency and profitability.
Following this, Dr. Christian Jhason O. Tecbobolan, who discussed the growing concern surrounding Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) in livestock production. He highlighted the importance of responsible antibiotic use to ensure long-term effectiveness of these critical medications. As part of his discussion, Tecbobolan introduced the VMD line of antibiotics, explaining how proper dosing, veterinary guidance, and correct administration can help minimize the risk of AMR. He also presented water medication strategies, emphasizing the role of water-soluble products from VMD as an efficient way to deliver treatment to swine populations while maintaining precise dosage and ensuring consistent intake.
The UNIBAT meeting served as an important venue for producers, industry partners, and technical experts to exchange insights and solutions. Through discussions on responsible antibiotic use, disease management, and market pressures, attendees gained valuable knowledge to help them navigate the evolving landscape of swine production. The session reinforced the importance of innovation, collaboration, and science-based practices in ensuring a more resilient and sustainable future for the Philippine swine industry.
